56. Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres I heard about this a few years ago on NPR, so when it showed up on BookMooch, I snatched it. Very interesting memoir about two siblings surviving a Christian reform school in the Dominican Republic. I took this to court with me for jury duty. Ugh. Didn' ...

37. Finished Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres. Although I liked it quite a bit, I think I'm going to steer clear of any more memoirs for a time. Reading about others' painful childhoods isn't good for me on a regular basis. :o/ I was pleasantly relieved with how Scheeres handled the terribly ...

Jesus Land sounds really interesting, although I didn't realize it would be so depressing. I think I will go ahead and add it to my TBR list. Picoult--I like her, but she definitely has her problems. I get the impression that she has reached the point where she is coasting a bit on her ...

    23. I enjoyed that book Jesus Land very much. We discussed it at my bookclub a few months ago. One of the members went to school with the author's older sister. Leebot, Thanks for the recommendation of Jesus Land. You're the second person to mention in so many days, so when I come back around to reading memoirs again, I'll definitely have to check it out.

... mix them up with other things or there is that "burn-out" factor. However, one other memoir I really found compelling was Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres. Her parents sent her and her brother to a religious "reform school" in the Dominican Republican, and her experience there was quite shocking. ...

... for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good..." As for the recent biographies, I've been urged to read Jesus Land about siblings who suffered horrible abuse. I also like bios by Holocaust survivors, such as Zvi.

I vote for Jesus Land and The Girl with the White Flag.

The Glass Castle and Jesus Land are Alex Award Winners, and Nickel and Dimed was on a YALSA booklist. So while they're not necessarily intended for YAs, they should appeal to a YA audience.

... I had too high of expectations. I have really enjoyed The Glass Castle. It's one of my favorite memoirs. I also loved Jesus Land, Julie and Julia and Name all the Animals.

... Bar by J.R. Moehringer, the former slightly more than the latter. Other enjoyable memoirs I've read recently include Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres and Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. I don't usually read many graphic novels, but Fun Home is one of the best books I've read all year.
