[edit] Overview

The Characters in your library page (part of Your Profile Common Knowledge) will give you information about important characters who appear in your books, plus the books you own and don't yet own with listed characters by that name.

[edit] Concepts

Character information is entered by LibraryThing members as part of Common Knowledge on a book's work page. If you want to know more, check out the Common_Knowledge wiki page or the group Common Knowledge, WikiThing, and HelpThing.

[edit] Features

The Characters in your library page is fairly simple. The characters are listed alphabetically, and you have two options to view them.

  • Your books will display only the books you own.
  • All books will display the books you own (with green check marks) as well as books you don't yet own (no check marks) that feature a character by that name.

You can click on any title to go to the corresponding work page. You can also click on a character name to go a to page with related tags, related characters, and other information.

[edit] Notes and Frequently-Asked-Questions

[edit] Why are characters with the same name intermingled?

While we know that characters with the same name are not always intended to be references to one another, sometimes they are. It can be interesting to find, for example, Tom Sawyer in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, or a character named Freud in The Hotel New Hampshire.

[edit] Why isn't my favorite character listed?

Common Knowledge information is entered by members just like you. Fewer people have entered character information as opposed to things like awards and series. You can help improve the listings for others by contributing to Common Knowledge yourself. See the Common_Knowledge wiki page or the group Common Knowledge, WikiThing, and HelpThing for more information on how to help.

[edit] It says I don't own (book name), but I do! Why?

There are several reasons your book might not show up:

  • Someone might not have entered character information for that book on the work page (Common Knowledge).
  • Your copy of the book might not have been properly combined with other copies of the same work.
  • You might have the book as "part" of a combined whole. The individual books in an omnibus edition (box set or combined-works-in-one volume) are not checked automatically.
