About meI am a book fanatic living in South Florida. I love travel, photography, reading, and living in joy. I have a spiritual counseling practice and also facilitate Artist's Way and Vein of Gold classes (based on Julia Cameron's books).
I took this photo of a waterlily at a botanical garden near home in June when the whole garden was in bloom with waterlilies - the sun caught the flower unaware and it glowed with pleasure -
About my libraryI love memoirs, beautifully written fiction, books about ordinary people living life in an extraordinary way and books that open my heart.
Many years I read over 120 books. Each year I include a list of my 25 favorite books in with my Christmas cards.
At the end of the year, I delete any books read that year that are not in my top 25 list, so other than the most recent books listed, all in my LT library are favorites. As of November, 2009, I have listed all of my top 25 of each year since 1980.
My ratings are as follows:
5 - one of the best books I've ever read
4 1/2 - an outstanding, memorable book
4 - a great book
anything below a 4 will be deleted after the end of the year
Here is my top 25 list for 2009 in order of favorites:
(books read between 12/08 and 11/09)
A Mercy - Toni Morrison
Blue Sky July - Nia Wyn
Cutting for Stone - Abraham Verghese
Half of a Yellow Sun - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Lark and Termite - Jayne Anne Phillips
Out Stealing Horses - Per Petterson
Madonnas of Leningrad - Debra Dean
19th Wife - David Ebershoff
Beautiful Boy - David Sheff
Zeitoun - Dave Eggers
Say You're One of Them - Uwem Akpan
Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace - Dalai Lama
Let the Great World Spin - Colum McCann
Bastard of Istanbul - Elif Shafak
Miracle in the Andes - Nando Parrado
Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro

Sounds like you have a wonderful global group of women in your class! Should be incredible getting the different perspectives!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm really enjoying reading around the world. It's opened up fabulous new worlds to me!
You wouldn't perhaps consider starting a reading thread?! I'd definitely star it and visit regularly – we share eerily similar reading tastes! The 75 group is extremely friendly and many of the readers have dispensed with numbers, including me because I doubt I'll make 75 this year. Too much living to do!
Another really lovely group is the Club Read 2009 (pronounced Club Red, as in well-read, I think) where really, there are no numbers and it's very relaxed. People just pop in when they have the time and list whatever they're reading, including magazine or internet articles, and everything in-between.
Do consider it!! I know I'd enjoy hearing about your reading pursuits!
Thanks for the compliments re my profile pics. Yay!! I've convinced one person that Cape Town is incredibly beautiful! My work here's done :)
Warmest regards,
Akeela

How are you?! Are you on holiday now that the course has ended? You must be missing the women you'd been bonding with for so many weeks?! I love getting together with a a group of like-minded women! There's nothing quite like it, is there? But you must find added joy, in helping women find their hidden talents and bringing it to the fore. What incredibly fulfilling work you do!
Pls excuse my silence for so long - I've been steeped in PC problems, but I think they're over now. I suffered serious LT withdrawal symptoms but managed to get online for a few minutes here and there using hubby's laptop when he wasn't hogging it :) (to be fair, he was working..)
I keep forgetting to congratulate you on the Obama win! Terrible, I know! Belated Congratulations!! I must tell you, we were celebrating euphorically in CT when we heard the results - as if he was our own President! I think this happened globally, from media reports. Amazing, how much hope is vested in this one, young man. May he have the strength and wisdom to do a great job!
We're enjoying summer in our part of the world, so I'm spending a lot of time in the garden. I have a vege patch and love pottering around when I'm free. I've had the pleasure of seeing cucumbers, strawberries, spinach, beetroot and a handful of other veges bud and then mature. It's a wonderful, joyful experience!
What are you currently reading?
Be well.
Blessings,
Akeela

Thank you, I really enjoy hearing from you, too.
Ok, it seems I'll have to find The Book Thief, then! It's incredible how similar our reading tastes are! I'd like to know what favorites you decide on for the year – the recipients are very fortunate indeed!
Lahiri seems to excel at the short story from what I gather. I read The Namesake, and it wasn't so great, whereas I found The Interpreter of Maladies fabulous. I haven't seen her latest collection of short stories here yet, but then I can't say I've gone out to look for it, either.
Thanks for the comment on the dolphin pic. We went to a dolphin show before going off into the mountains on the hiking trip, and I was blown away by their intelligence and ability to follow instructions. There were five dolphins altogether, though only three appear in this pic, and the show was an absolute treat!
Oh gosh! If I had a library within walking distance from home, I might move in there! :)
Bless you, too!

Seems the days have run away from me and I'm the bad correspondent now :)
Hope you're well?!
What I'm currently reading.. It's difficult to say. I have one book to go on my 75 Book Challenge for the year, and somehow I just can't get into anything right now! I've started about three (or four) but am not smitten with any! Hope my luck changes soon.
How are you finding The Book Thief? It's received many rave reviews here on LT. I'll wait for your comments before I run out and get it!

Well done! That's a huge book you just finished!
I wondered why you were so quiet! You were on vac, as well!
I'm afraid I might have made our trip sound like it was a camping expedition but, in fact, we were in a very comfy hotel located in the mountains. Hubby and I hiked during the day, for long hours, and then we'd return to the comfort of the hotel for showers and wonderful 3-course dinners – it wasn't quite as rough as it sounded :) It was wonderful!
We have astoundingly similar tastes in books! That's exactly why I love LT!
How's “Edgar Sawtelle” going? Hope you're enjoying it? “Handbook to Luck” sounds fascinating. I'll have to check that one out, too. Thanks for mentioning it.
I love Julia Cameron's work. I have another of her books that I read from time to time entitled “God is No Laughing Matter”. I really enjoy her work, though I'm not sure if I'll finish this one any time soon! Like the others, it's a workbook. Have you met Cameron? She must be quite inspiring?!
Listing my 2008 reads has been such a treat! I hope to do it again in 2009, and I hope you'll join us?! I'd love to see what you read and gain some more ideas for my reading list!
Thanks, all credit must go to my dear hub who's the photographer :)
Have a great week!

How you doing? I've been away on a hiking trip. Hubby and I got back a few days ago but I've needed some time to recover :)
What are you currently reading? Have you had any really fabulous reads this year?!

Welcome to LT! I think you'll love it here.
You have an interesting library and we share some favourites, including "Gift from the Sea", "The Prophet" by Gibran, and "The Space Between Us" by Thrity Umrigar. I just bought "Snow Flower and The Secret Fan" and am happy to see you enjoyed it! I also have "The Journey Home" by Mistry on my to-be-read-soon list.
I have to warn you, though, LT is extremely addictive and consumes a lot of reading time!!
Happy reading!
PS I love the sculpture, by the way! Where is it from?
